I was just doing my daily readup on some cycling forum and noticed a member had a nice ATB with good gear. I wanted it so i sent him a pm.
Me: Hey, nice ride, wanna sell?
Him: Sure, how much?
Me: How about 600?
Him: Hmmm.... K Deal!
Me: Cool! Let's ask the community how they think about it.
Him: Sorry?
Me: Common practise man. In Cycling Simulator we do it all the time...
Him: WTF... forget about it man.

Well the only good point about it to me is that it's not obligatory. Nick just stated this guideline 'can' be used to avoid trades being judged as benificial.
So, as i read it there's nothing obligatory here. It's just that everyone takes it this way. Nothing wrong with private deals in most situations.
I do see your criticism though and I understand it to an extend as well. I think you made the point quite well.
A lot of managers seem to want private deals banned altogether, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see how it goes.
Yup, that's one way to look at it.
If you were buying it for $2000, and it was only worth $600, it would be worth asking the community. Especially if you were new to ATB and didn't know how much bikes were worth.
